COME UNTO ME: THE FACES OF TYREE GUYTON

(Cinemax) 7:30 tonight

This little gem from Naked Eye Prods., airing in Cinemax's "Reel Life" documentary series, explores the deeply provocative work of environmentalist artist Tyree Guyton while chronicling his encounters with the grinding gears of Detroit's apparently benighted government.

Using a gritty pastiche of film clips and interviews refreshingly free of gratuitous emotion and richly enhanced by an eclectic soundtrack, filmmaker Nicole Cattell's tribute to Guyton's artistic determination captures the confusing splendor of his vision, all the more moving because of the city's demolition of much of what he has created.

Using her 30 minutes with admirable efficiency, Cattell's magnificent look at the polka-dot-painted houses, sidewalks and streets Guyton created in one of Detroit's worst neighborhoods will draw many viewers untrained in the ways of art into a world of great wonder and beauty.
